It might come as a surprise, but there is actually no medical reason to keep a child with a cold home after the first day or so, because he'll no longer be infectious after that.
However, for the sake of his comfort, you should consider it. A daycare center may not be able to provide the extra TLC a child needs when suffering from cold. In addition, many daycare centers won't allow a child with a cold to attend until he is symptom-free.
