2.5 hours of weekly exercise, enough

New health guidelines suggest that a mere two and half-hours of weekly physical activity is sufficient for adults to remain healthy.

Consistent with the findings of previous studies, the new statement urges individuals to become physically active in order to reduce weight, prevent chronic diseases, and live longer.

The statement, however, does not limit individuals to certain sports and encourages choosing exercise routines based on personal preference.

According to the recent statement, children and adolescents should do their favorite activities for about one hour every day and have more intense exercise at least three days a week.

The statement says adults should do a minimum of 10 minutes of exercise per day; the workout should consist of muscle-strengthening exercises at least two days a week.

The report urges healthy pregnant women to do 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week during pregnancy and the postpartum period. As for disabled individuals 2.5 hours of physical activity per week depending on their disability has been advised.

Seniors over 65 are also urged to do the same 2.5 hours of weekly exercise while focusing on exercises that can help with their balance.
