Starting out breastfeeding; immediately after baby is born 0–4 days
This is just after you’ve given birth and are starting to breastfeed. It’s often called the initiation stage.
Breastfeeding now gives vital fluid, immunological factors and nutrients to the newborn (in the first milk called colostrum) and their ‘latching on’ starts your milk flowing.
The majority of new mothers will be in a maternity care facility for some of the time, however, some will be at home during this period.
Why start out breastfeeding?
- The early breast milk, or colostrum, protects baby from infections.
- Breast milk gives food and fluid for a baby in the most easily digested way.
- Breastfeeding helps bond with baby.
- Breastfeeding helps your organs return to their normal place/shape.
- Breastfeeding reduces your risk of immediate post-birth bleeding.
Remember any breastfeeding is good for baby, so if you’ve made it this far, you’re doing well.
