We don't know for sure. Not enough research has been done to determine whether electrolysis is safe during pregnancy.

That said, electrolysis has been around for over 100 years, and in all that time there haven't been any reported cases of harmful effects related to pregnancy. So if you've had excess facial hair for some time and really want to get rid of it during your pregnancy, the risks are probably very small.

On the other hand, if you've only noticed you're hairier than usual since you got pregnant, I recommend being patient and waiting until after your baby is born to get electrolysis. That excess hair is caused by higher levels of hormones during pregnancy and will probably go away on its own after you have the baby.

If the hair really bothers you, you can shave or tweeze in the meantime if you want.

Even if you had excess hair before you got pregnant, to be on the safe side, you may want to wait until after your baby is born to have electrolysis done on your abdomen, bikini area, or chest.

And if you plan to breastfeed, you shouldn't have electrolysis on your breasts (particularly around the nipples) during the last couple weeks of pregnancy or after. For one thing, the breasts are very sensitive during and after pregnancy. Plus, your baby sucking on the skin around the nipples could be very painful if you have recently had electrolysis on your breasts.

If you do choose to have hair removed now rather than wait, be sure your electrologist is licensed. Better still, ask your dermatologist for a recommendation. Some dermatologists even have a licensed electrologist on staff.
