The Baby Budget: How To Keep Family Finances in Order
By Sara Richmond Walls

One of the greatest concerns parents have before having a baby is how they are going to be able to feed another hungry mouth! While this concern is valid, there are may ways to save pennies while welcoming a new member of the family.

Go Generic

There are generic versions of almost everything these days. In the world of babies, you can purchase non-brand name formula, diapers, baby wipes, diaper cream, gas drops, acetaminophen, and MUCH more. Yes, there will be certain things that you may find a quality difference on and you can choose brand name versions of those items. But, in many cases, the generic works just as well!

Reduce Utility Expenses
Turn the lights of when you don't need them. Take shorter (5-10 minute) showers. Don't leave the water running when you brush your teeth or wash your face. Purchase rain buckets to water your plants with. Reseal around your windows and make sure the weather stripping on exterior doors is sufficient.

Beware of Bulk
There are benefits to buying in bulk, especially when it comes to diapers and wipes. And, it means less trips to the store! However, there are occasions when buying bulk does not mean buying cheaper. Check the cent or dollar value per ounce, pound, gram, etc. It may be cheaper to purchase things in smaller quantities.

Shop For Clothing Wisely
Go to thrift stores. Accept hand-me-downs. This will not only reduce spending, but it is also an environmentally focused way to keep piles of clothes out of landfills.
